Defeating Procrastination
Defeating Procrastination
by Kimberly Walker, Life Purpose Coach®

Have you delayed finishing a project or making a decision? Procrastination is more than putting off for tomorrow what should be done today. Procrastination actually robs you of your future and hinders your progress. It is difficult to start something new and exciting while lugging the baggage of unfinished projects. Here are some tips my coaching clients have found useful in saying KNOW to procrastination:
KNOW why you procrastinate. Is it that you really do not want to clean out the hall closet or is your mother-in-law’s unkind words about it during her last visit? You may be procrastinating in order to regain a sense of control.
KNOW your avoidance behavior pattern. Do you start to watch television, eat a snack or some other diversionary tactic? When you see this behavior surface, allow it to serve as an alert that you are procrastinating.
KNOW what tasks you have postponed. Make a list of all the tasks you have avoided and give each one a deadline. Every time you have the amount of time needed to complete a procrastinated task, get it done.
Do the hardest thing first. KNOW that once you accomplish the hardest, most unpalatable things, everything else will seem easier in comparison.
KNOW whether the deferred task is your responsibility. If not, determine whether it is unnecessary, untimely, needs to be delegated or discontinued and act on it immediately.
Let someone else KNOW you. Share your strategy with a friend or coach who is able to encourage you as well as hold you accountable.
KNOW and apply the techniques that will work for you. Great ideas do not work until you do.
KNOW that change takes time. Applaud small successes. Do not become discouraged if you do not change overnight. It takes time and consistent effort to change a habit.
